Reset button not working in Cisco LINKSYS WRT120N wireless router

I bought a new Cisco LINKSYS WRT120N wireless router and noticed that reset button is not working properly in it. That means if I press and hold the reset button to reset the router settings to factory defaults, it is not working. After some troubleshooting, I figured out the problem and fixed it. The solution here is to upgrade the firmware of the wireless router to latest version.

To do this, follow below steps.

  1. Download latest firmware for WRT120N wireless router from Cisco site(http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/wireless/lbc/WRT120N ) and save to disk
  2. Now takeout the router power -> Hold the reset button -> Connect the power
  3. Now connect a network cable from your computer to port#1 of wireless router. To surprise you here, the LED#4 glows though you connected the cable to port#1. Don’t worry…. This is not much to bother
  4. Open browser in your computer and go to http://192.168.1.1
  5. A window appears asks you to input the firmware file. Here select the file and click on reset
  6. This upgrades the firmware version to latest and now you can use the regular method for resetting the password to factory settings by holding the reset key. The reset key should work now as expected

At step #3 i get stuck. I connect the cable to the computer but then I loose internet. So i tried skipping 3 and went to step #4 and it didn’t ask for no firmware file. Is there a another way to update the router? Is there a file I can pull up and update it that way? My reset button doesn’t work and I can’t log in with that IP

Hello. I went to the site you had told us and I can’t find the file. Any ideas? i have this router and it keeps dropping my family from the internet and I have to reset it everyday.

Hey there, this info seems to have possibly helped, but after I select the firmware upgrade file, and click continue (twice), it takes me to a screen that says the file upgrade couldn’t be verified (or something to that effect). Did the reset work? Should I try to connect my router to my cable modem again to see if it actually did the reset? Side note: I also selected the reboot link, and again, it seems to have worked, but I haven’t tried re-connecting my internet, as I’m afraid it’s just a waste of time and effort. Thanks for any insight! 🙂

Since you have attempted multiple solutions(reset and IOS upgrade), I prefer you verify the functionality of wireless router once by connecting it to modem. Not all problems will be solved one solution and not all solutions fixes a single problem 🙂 So, I feel it’s worth you give a try.

let me know how it goes.

    Hello,
Thanks for the info. I upgraded the firmware without any issues, I think. Do the router lights blink or anything when it is upgrading? The process completes and brings me back to the same screen, and then I click on RESET to get it out of that mode. I then press and hold the reset bottom for 10 seconds. It resets my wireless settings, but not the password. No I had a wide open Wireless network and not access to the configuration settings!!! Any other suggestions besides buying another router?

Hi, The password reset method changes from vendor to vendor. So if you can share the model number, I will be able to point to the right reference.
